Top Tips for Great Beach Trips With Your Dog!

Previous2 of 2

Bring Fresh Water

Also remember that hydration is key, even for pets. Providing a lot of fresh, cool water for your pup throughout the day can help prevent overheating and heat stroke. Something additional to cool off your dog during the day would to bring a spray bottle full of cool water. This can also be used to clean off the salt and sand from the sensitive paw skin to avoid irritation.

Know Your Dog’s Comfortability with Water

If you’re bringing your dog to the beach, then you most likely know how he reacts to water and whether he can swim. But this may be your first venture out, and there is a possibility you may not know his swimming prowess, or if he even likes the water! If there is even a bit of doubt, bring along a doggie life jacket. These jackets come in all sizes and are designed to keep your dog comfortable and safe while he’s in the water.

If you take your pooch to the water and he doesn’t immediately jump in, then be sure to take it slow. He may be more comfortable if you go in first and then call for him to join you. If all else fails, do not force him in if he is still hesitant to go to the water.

Notice Your Dog’s Behavior

A summer beach trip usually exposes you to two extremes in temperatures: heat from the sun and cold from frigid ocean waters. Pay attention to how your dog acts during the day to ensure he is not having any symptoms of heat stroke or hypothermia – especially if he’s been sitting outside of the umbrella or taking a lot of time to splash and swim. Take your dog out of the environment immediately if you notice any change in your dog’s demeanor. Make sure to seek medical attention if these symptoms worsen or do not improve.

Keep a Solid Time Schedule

We are always looking for maximum playtime when on vacation, especially when bringing pets, but dogs get just as worn out as people do.  A full day of fresh air, swimming, and hot sun can often be exhausting for both people and their furkids. Depending on your dog’s temperament, just a few hours of beach activity may be more than enough.

Keep these tips in mind as you head out to your beach of choice this summer. Creating these memories and being able to include your beloved pet will ensure a meaningful summer beach trip.
